You are invited to attend:
WIN CALIS AUTHORING
SUMMER SEMINAR
2000

WEEK ONE: EXPLORE!
BEGINNING-INTERMEDIATE

July 17-21, 2000

Welcome to WinCALIS! This one-week course is designed for those with little or no previous experience with WinCALIS. Participants will be instructed, if necessary, in the fundamental techniques of Windows and introduced to the basics of WinCALIS authoring. Seminar attendants will complete lessons in WinCALIS, and learn different authoring skills sufficient to produce simple classroom lessons.

Specific techniques include computer-based language learning methodology, implementation of various WinCALIS Author question types, use templates, producing accents and diacritics, and authoring in non-Roman languages. Methods of creating multimedia lessons are explored as well. Hands-on experience is emphasized through demonstration, exercises, one-on-one assistance with trained instructors, and "show-and-tell" opportunities.

Entirely new will be the opportunity to explore authoring with WinCALIS Author for the World Wide Web  and for multiple computer platforms, including Macintosh computers and Unix workstations, via our new Java-based system, WebCALIS.

WEEK TWO: EXPAND!
INTERMEDIATE-ADVANCED

July 24-28, 2000

Explore with WinCALIS! Aimed toward WinCALIS users with some scripting experience, in addition to a good knowledge of Windows, this seminar provides a more intensive approach to the WinCALIS environment.

Addresses such issues as screen design and lesson aesthetics; flexibility and effectiveness in feedback; more advanced authoring techniques, including buttons, hypertext, hotspots on graphics; menus and branching, etc. Authors will venture into the world of customizing and communicating through WinCALIS script-writing. Learn how to format lessons for speed and ease of use, and how to create on-line help materials. The usage and implementation of multimedia in WinCALIS is also covered. Gain experience and proficiency through in-class exercises, interaction with experienced WinCALIS users, and sharing scripts and ideas with other seminar participants.

Specific emphasis will be placed on incorporating advanced WinCALIS functions in the educational medium. Further, participants create and manipulate audio and video clips in the Multimedia Editor, which allows them to bring live action to lessons through digitized audio and video, laserdisc player, or VCR. As in the other sessions, experience is gained through in-class exercises, and through development of WinCALIS-authored software by interaction with experienced WinCALIS authors.

Entirely new will be the opportunity to explore authoring with WinCALIS Author for the World Wide Web  and for multiple computer platforms, including Macintosh computers and Unix workstations, via our new Java-based system, WebCALIS.

WEEK THREE: FLY!
