Sun's Java Plug-in and WebCALIS/Java UniEdit

You can now use Sun's Java Runtime Environment (JRE) for Windows and Java Plug-in to run WebCALIS. This enables you to use Sun's JRE instead of the Web browser's default virtual machine. Thus, (according to Sun!) no matter what browser you use, you will get consistency, reliability, and all of the newest Java features when running applets (this applies to all applets, and not just WebCALIS).

If you already have JRE and Java Plug-in installed and configured, you can proceed to our WebCALIS for Java Plug-in page or to our Java UniEdit applet 1.00 for Java Plug-in page.
Warning: Older versions of MS Internet Explorer might crash or not work properly when Java Plug-in is used! Also, if you use Microsoft's new Arial Unicode MS font and add it to your font.properties file, as we did, it might cause Netscape to fail to load.

Otherwise, to take advantage of this, follow these simple instructions: (it may be a good idea to print this document as you may have to reboot your machine)

  1. Download Sun's newest JRE and Java Plug-in package
  2. Install the package by double-clicking on it in your Windows Explorer or by running it from the Start menu.
  3. Configure Java Plug-in:
    1. Choose Java Plug-in Control Panel from your Start Menu and Programs.
    2. Select the Basic tab, and check: Enable Java Plug-in and Cache JARs in memory.
    3. Select the Advanced tab, and check: Enable Just In Time Compiler.
    4. Select the Proxies tab, and check: Use browser settings.
    5. Finally, hit the "Apply" button.

You are now all set to use the Java Plug-in. Be sure to restart your browser since following the above instructions, if you haven't already. Feel free to proceed to our WebCALIS for Java Plug-in page or to our Java UniEdit applet 1.00 for Java Plug-in page.
Warning: Older versions of MS Internet Explorer might crash or behave incorrectly when Java Plug-in is used.
