Public Access High-Tech Workstations

HUMANITIES COMPUTING LABORATORY

The Humanities Computing Lab has a wealth of computer applications and equipment for use by Duke faculty, students, staff, or members of the general community. For public use, we have "Wintel" Pentium II PCs with Windows 9x, NT 4.0, and Windows 2000; an Apple Macintosh Power Mac; a Linux workstation; and a Sun Solaris Unix SPARC.

You can use our hardware and software for as long as you want, or you can use it for just a short while, to "try before you buy." Self-service fees are shown below. Full services are also available, if you prefer.

Software available falls into many categories:

For a list of specific software products we have available, see our educational technology software page. Products marked with "HCL" are already available in our lab. However, if you don't see what you need, let us know. We can often be coaxed into buying and installing a new product, if we feel there is general demand.

Fees for public use are by the minute or hour (see below), with free initial computer/application orientation and assistance. You are also welcome to use these computers to give applications a trial run, to test those applications or pieces of equipment that you are considering purchasing.
